EXPERIENCE THE PARTIAL SOLAR ECLIPSE
The Mary L Cook Library will be providing free solar eclipse viewing glasses on a first come, first serve basis beginning Monday, August 14. We ask that you limit yourself to only two glasses per family so that everyone has a chance to use the glasses to view the eclipse. Please DO NOT take the viewing glasses if you don’t intend to view the eclipse. Just stop by the front desk of the library to pick up your pair of glasses.

Everyone's welcome, plus we hope to see all of our Summer Reading Program readers of all ages. The Dulcimer Friends of Caesar Creek will be our musical guests. There will be plenty of FREE ice cream with toppings. So bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit on and join us as we enjoy music, ice cream, and friendly neighbors.
WHAT'S BLOOMING?
With over 80,000 cultivars, the hardy daylilies (Hemerocallis) serve as one of the easiest perennials to place in your garden. Their adaptability helps them tolerate drought or wet land, poor or fertile soils, blazing-hot sun or shade, some frost, and general neglect. When in bloom, daylilies attract a range of pollinators. Daylilies come in a rainbow of colors to fit any color scheme you’ve planned for your garden; from yellow so faint that it’s nearly white, to wine-red so deep that it appears black. Some varieties are even rebloomers, having more than a single flush of flowers per season. If you’d like to see some of these garden powerhouses in action, there are some in front of the gazebo and a bed full of them edging the sidewalk that wraps around the back of the gazebo.
The Mary L. Cook Library and Warren County Master Gardeners invite you to take frequent walks around these demonstration gardens. The scenery is always changing, and we’re available to answer any questions you might have.

SUMMER READING PROGRAMS
The Mary L. Cook Public Library was a very busy place this summer. We had record number of juveniles, teens, adults, and families participating in our summer reading programs. We had over 540 juveniles reading books to try to win a shiny new bicycle (donated by retired realtor Gil Irvin), Kings Island passes, as well as 17 other prizes (Frozen slushie machine, cash, lego sets, and more). Our teens were reading in hopes of winning cash and gift certificates. The families in Waynesville are READERS!
Thank you to the Beach Water Park, Newport Aquarium, COSI, and Cincinnati Zoo for providing gift certificates allowing families that read together to play together.
Thank you, Friends of the Library, for providing the super reader T-shirts for the juvenile readers of 20 books or 12 hours this summer.
Thank you, Gil Irvin, for the wonderful bicycle that was an incentive for many of the juveniles to reach their goal of 20 books/10 hours.
Thank you, King’s Island, for the passes that encouraged our readers.
Thank you, John and Becky Barney for donating $125.00 that was a huge incentive for many teens to read, read, read this summer.

Preschoolers through 5th graders….
During the month of August, we are having “Fun in the Sun … Read!” Check out 5 books and receive a chance to choose a hot reward.
1000 Books Before Kindergarten
In August 2014, The Mary L. Cook Public Library launched a new literacy program, 1000 Books Before Kindergarten. We have 25 readers who have completed the goal of 1000 books.
If you read your child one book a day, she/he will reach 1000 books in under three years. Though the goal of this program is to improve literacy skills, but even more, it’s about time spent together reading. Stop in today and ask us how to register your child for this program.
Preschool Storytimes for 3 - 5 year olds including kindergartners on Thursdays 10:30 - 11:15 am or Thursdays 6:45 - 7:30 pm. Begins Thursday, September 21 - registration requested. We play games, sign songs, hear stories, and share laughs. Special Storytimes include Halloween Parties, Easter Egg Hunt, and more; watch for details.
Toddler Laptime is for 2 year olds & their caregivers on Tuesdays, 6:45 - 7:10 pm - October 3 through November 7. Join us for stories, games, and many laughs. Required registration in person begins September 18. Limit - 12 toddlers and 12 caregivers.
Baby Bookworms is for children birth to two years with a caregiver. Watch for details this fall for when these sessions will resume.
Chapters Book Club is a book club for those in grades 1 and 2. This group will read one short chapter book a month, then meet to discuss the book, the author, and do activities associated with the book. The Chapters Book Club will hold its first meeting on Tuesday, September 19 from 4:00 – 4:45 pm. Registration is required and will be available the beginning of September.
Calling all bookworms (grades 3 – 5) to join The Rapid Readers & wRiters on Tuesday, September 26 from 4:00 – 5:00 pm. Please join us as we discuss books, play games, try out a bit of creative writing, and enjoy a light snack. Registration is required for this book club and will be available beginning of September. Look Who’s Reading Book Club (grade K) on Tuesday, September 26, 6:00 – 6:30 pm. The group will engage in a variety of fun learning activities featuring phonics, the writing of letters and words, and many other skills that promote a strong literacy foundation. Stop in to today to register and pick up the book for the month. Books will be available to pick up the beginning of September.

You can get a teacher card account at the Mary L. Cook Public Library. Perks include:
**Extended Loan Privileges - Teachers may borrow materials for an extended loan period - Books and audio materials for six weeks and DVDs for one week.
**Fine Free - Teachers have no fines on their Teacher Cards at The Mary L. Cook Public Library! We want to support our hard working teachers as they educate our students.
**Book Collections - Teachers may request that a book collection be chosen for their students’ use. Call or email with all the details of your request. We will put your collection together and you simply stop in and pick it up. (Give us 3 days to put this together, please).
**Library and Classroom Visits - Teachers and their students are welcome to visit the library or we will visit your students in the classroom.

The book club meets at 1 pm on Tuesday, August 8. The group will be reading All The Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr. Books are available at the front desk.
FLIPSTER MAGAZINES
Take a look at our new additions to our Flipster Magazine collection. We have added Wired, National Geographic Kids, Dr.Oz: The Good Life, Discover, Cooking Light, Do It Yourself, Ohio Magazine, and in addition to Consumer Reports magazine, we have the Consumer Reports Buying Guide for easy access. We still have many favorites like People, HGTV, US Magazine, Redbook, Prevention, Good Housekeeping, Redbook, Country Living, Real Simple, and Food Network. You can access current additions as well as past additions. Simply download the Flipster app to your phone or tablet and select our library. You will be able to download magazines for offline reading if you wish. You can also use the access (carousel) on our Website to view these magazines.
OUR MLC APP
Stay in touch with us. Download your MLC library app today to your phone or tablet and get easy access to your MLC account, the catalog, our free databases like Heritage Quest, events, our facebook page, etc. or just select our mobile website. It is available at the app store for Android and Apple devices. For Kindlefire tablets, you need to go to settings to “Allow Apps from Unknown Sources” (set it to on) and then using your silk browser (internet), go to mlcook.boopsie.com. The app should automatically download. You may need to check in downloads to complete installing the app. Let us know what you think!
LIBBY, THE NEW OVERDRIVE APP
OverDrive (Ohio Digital Library) now offers a new app, Libby, with one-tap access to the thousands of ebooks and audioebooks that we offer. Libby is simple to set up and use. It is available in the Google Play App store, the Apple Store, and the Windows Store (10+). The Amazon app for KindleFire is not yet available, but Kindle users should continue using the OverDrive app until it is ready. Libby is highly user-friendly. Get yours today!

Joanne and Eli from The Humane Association of Warren County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center will be here to talk with you and answer your questions. *We will be making a dog toy for them to take back to the shelter dogs plus a few kennel mats.
