NEW - CAREGIVER TOTES

 Could one of your loved ones benefit from a little memory encouragement?  The library has assembled 3 Caregiver Totes chock-full of  enjoyable activities, puzzles, and devices geared to do just that. Each of the totes differs by the level of engagement required.  Take home one of these therapeutic kits to try out today (two-week loan period).

CHROMEBOOKS AND BLU-RAY PLAYERS

Have you wondered about Chromebooks or Blu-Ray players?  The library is pleased to have three Chromebooks and two Blu-Ray players to loan out to our adult patrons (over age 18).  The loan period is one week for each of these items with one renewal possible.

ADULT BOOK CLUB

The adult book club will meet Tuesdays at 1 pm.  Jan. 3 - William Henry is a Fine Name by Cathy Gohlke; Jan. 17 - The Book of Speculation by Erika Swyler; Jan. 31 - Princess by Jean Sasson. Books will be available at the front desk.  

CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION MOVIE SERIES:

LIBRARIANS IN LIGHTS!

For our 100th anniversary year, we are showing free classic movies featuring libraries/librarians through the decades.  On Monday, Jan. 5 at 1 pm, we'll watch "Desk Set" starring Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn.

SIGN UP FOR DRAWING CLASSES

Instructor Mary Sroka-Calvert will conduct a new  adult Drawing I class on Wednesday nights from 6 - 8 pm for six weeks beginning Feb. 8 (no experience necessary).  Signups begin January 3.  For those who have completed Drawing I and II sessions, Drawing III will be held for six weeks beginning Monday, Mar. 13 from 6 - 8 pm.

CARRIAGE HILL

Can't sew?  You don't have to in order to make our wintery fleece hat and scarf.  Sheila will be over on Friday, Jan. 13 at 2 pm to show you how. 

SPLATTER PAINT GREETING CARDS

Add a touch of class to your personally-created greeting card using a splatter paint technique. This free class for those ages 16 and up will be held Friday, Jan. 13 at 6:30 pm.  Required registration begins Jan. 3.  No experience is necessary.

ROOTFINDERS

Rootfinders will meet Saturday, Jan. 14 at 10 am.  If case of inclement weather, Rootfinders will be cancelled.

TAX SEMINAR FOR SMALL BUSINESSES

Local CPA John Keyes will hold a free seminar on taxes for small businesses on Wednesday, Jan. 18 at 6:30 pm.

ZENTANGLE

Zentangle classes will be held Monday, Jan. 30 at 6 pm and Tuesday, Jan. 31 at 9:30 am.  There is a $5 fee for each class taken.  Sign up at the front desk.

TAX SEMINAR FOR INDIVIDUALS

John Keyes, CPA, will be back for a second free tax seminar, this time for individuals, on Wednesday, Feb. 1 at 6:30 pm.

KNITTING

Knitters of all levels are welcome to meet with our group each Thursday at 5 pm.

TODDLER LAPTIMES

Toddler Laptimes are for 2 year olds and their caregivers on Tuesdays from 6:45 - 7:10 pm from Jan. 17 - Feb. 21.  Required in-person registration begins Jan. 3.  Limit - 12 toddlers and 12 caregivers.

BABY BOOKWORMS

This baby storytime is for children from birth to 24 months and their caregiver on Wednesdays from 10:30 –11:00 am, beginning January 4, 2017. Parents/caregivers are expected to stay with children during all storytime sessions. Registration can be completed in the library when you arrive for program.

PRESCHOOL STORYTIMES

Preschool Storytimes are for 3 - 5 year olds including kindergartners,  Thursdays 10:30 - 11:15 am or Thursdays 6:45 - 7:30 pm.  Come every Thursday from January 5 to mid-May for stories, games, songs, and crafts. Registration is requested.

STORYTIME SUPERSTARS

Come to storytime at the Mary L. Cook Public Library and get a stamp.  When you have 10 stamps on your Storytime Superstar card, you will earn a free book.  We will keep your Storytime Superstar card here at the library.

1000 BOOKS BEFORE KINDERGARTEN

            Have you signed your child up for this exciting reading program for children ages birth - 5 years?  This program encourages families to read at least 1,000 books to their preschooler before they enter school.  Each child will receive a folder to record their books.  Every time 20 books are recorded, children can bring their folder to the library to receive a sticker.  When 100 books are recorded, children receive a free book, and select more library books to record.  Reading is fundamental to ensure your child’s success in school.

PRESCHOOLERS THROUGH GRADE 5...

READING IS MAGIC: Visit the library today and carry out great books to read.  Check out 5 books and receive a chance to choose a hot prize.

CHAPTERS BOOK CLUB

Chapters Book Club is for those in grades 1 and 2.  This group will read one short chapter book a month, and then meet to discuss the book, the author, and do activities.  This club meets Tuesday, Jan. 10 from 4:00 – 4:45 pm.  Registration is required (presently full).

RAPID READERS AND WRITERS

Calling all bookworms (grades 3 – 5) for the Rapid Readers & wRiters on Tuesday, Jan. 17 from 4:00-5:00 pm.  We discuss books, play games, try out creative writing, and enjoy a light snack. Registration is required (presently full).

 

 

 LOOK WHO'S READING BOOK CLUB

The Look Who’s Reading Book Club (grade K) will meet Tuesday, Jan. 17 from 6:00 – 6:30 pm.   The group engages in fun learning activities featuring phonics, letter and word writing, and other skills that promote a strong literacy foundation (presently full). 

AMERICAN GIRL TEA PARTIES

Join us for an American Girl Winter Tea Party for young ladies ages 8 and up on Saturday, Jan. 21. We are offering two parties this year.  The first will be from 10:30am - 12:00 and the second party will be 12:30 - 2:00 pm.  Required registration begins January 3.  Each party is limited to 20 participants. LEGO FUN FOR GRADES 1 - 5

Choose one day to join us: Monday, Jan.  23 from 6:00 – 7:00 pm or Saturday, Jan.  28, from 10:30 – 11:30 am.  We supply Legos of all sizes and a theme.  Register beginning Jan. 9.  This program is limited to 20.

SHADOW SCIENCE

We see shadows every day - let’s learn about them Friday, Jan. 27 from 4:00 - 4:45 pm.  This program is for preschoolers and a caregiver (3 yrs. – K).  Registration begins Jan. 9.

STUFFED ANIMAL SLEEPOVER

Children (ages 3 yrs. - grade 1), bring your favorite stuffed animal to the library for a sleepover on Friday, Feb. 10.  From 4:00-4:45 pm, enjoy stories and activities.  Then on Saturday, Feb.  11 (between 10am - 2pm), pick up your stuffed animal and see what kind of mischief your huggable buddy got into after dark.   Registration begins Jan. 23 (limited to 35).

BE A PART OF THE TEEN SCENE

     Teens in grades 7 and up (or the equivalent) can become a part of “The Teen Scene” at the Mary L. Cook Public Library by becoming members of TAB - the Teen Advisory Board.  These teens assist with materials selection, programming plans, and other activities.  The board and staff of the library believe teens should be allowed to share their opinions and ideas.  Applications are now available at the library as well as at the Waynesville Middle School and High School libraries.  Stop in and pick one up before January 31. Please contact Sheila or Kathy if you have questions.

TEEN CAFE

The Teen Cafe resumes Jan. 4.  Teens (gr. 6 & up), join the fun and bring a friend each Wednesday after school from 3:00-4:00 pm. Each week is something different – snacks, plus movies, games,  or crafts.

Note: If Wayne Local is closed due to weather, the Teen Café is cancelled.  For questions, call Sheila at 513-897-4826.

 

 

TEEN NO-SEW HAT & SCARF

 Teens (grades 6 and up), come for a No-Sew Fleece Hat & Scarf on Friday, Jan.  20 from 6:30 – 7:30 pm.  No experience is needed, supplies are included, and there is no charge. Required registration begins Monday, Jan. 3. The library will be closed to the public at this time.

 

THE FRIENDS ANNUAL HOLIDAY AUCTION

The Friends of the Mary L. Cook Public Library Holiday Auction was an enormous success!  This fundraiser has grown to be more than just wreaths to be auctioned; we had gift baskets, paintings, desks, candles, and even an OSU football print.
