LABOR DAY
The library is closed Monday, Sep. 5 for Labor Day.
SUNDAY HOURS BEGIN SEPTEMBER 11
We will be open Sundays from 1 pm to 4 pm beginning Sep. 11.
WHAT'S BLOOMING?
If you take a look in the garden next to the sidewalk on the south end of the front face of the library, you’ll see Physostegia virginiana (obedient plant) starting to bloom. It spreads from vigorous rhizomes and grows 3-4 feet tall, attracting pollinators to its nearly iridescent pinkish-lavender colored, tiny, tubular flowers, which grow in upright spikes. Physostegia virginiana is native to Ohio and is called “obedient plant” due to the individual flowers, when twisted in various directions, tend to stay where you put them, as if on a hinge, for a short amount of time.
Mary L. Cook Library and Warren County Master Gardeners invite you to take frequent walks around these demonstration gardens. The scenery is always changing, and we’re available to answer any questions you might have.

AUTHOR VISIT
On Saturday, September 24 from 10 am to 2 pm, come meet new local author, Angie Grigaliunas. Angie is a fantasy writer and blogger.
Her recent book is titled Sowing:
"People are dead, slaughtered like animals in the night. The reigning power, the Hulcondans, blame rebels. Rabreah, a rebel, knows it’s a lie. Her younger sister, Ariliah, doesn’t; like the majority of the townspeople, she believes those in authority, swallowing their words with complete trust. Besides, she’s too busy fighting her own silent war at home. While Rabreah dedicates herself to truth and freedom, Ariliah is just trying to survive their mother’s abuse.
But as unknown forces threaten to rip their world apart, the line between friend and enemy blurs. All is not as it seems. In fact, nothing may be."
Angie welcomes you to stop by during these hours and chat with her.
WATERCOLOR CLASS
Pam Campbell will resume her watercolor painting class on Monday, Sep. 26 from 9 am - noon. She is unable to accept new students in this fall session as the class is full.
REMEMBER TO REMEMBER!
We are still searching for community members who have recollections of Dr. Mary L. Cook, Ada Courtney, or Mary Current to share with us for our library's 100th anniversary celebration in 2017. We would also like to scan in pictures of library events that took place over the years for possible use in our documentary.
Please contact the library.
OHIOANA ROOM
Our Ohioana Room renovation is in process. The Ohioana Room materials will not be accessible until this is completed and materials are reshelved, which will be approximately at the end of October. Thank you for your patience.

IT'S SCHOOL TIME! IT'S TOOL TIME!
Get your library card today! It’s the most important tool you will ever use for school! And every time you use your card to check out five books at the Mary L. Cook Public Library between September 1 & September 30, you’ll receive a chance to win a basket of school tools (appropriate for your age - preschoolers thru 5th graders)!
1,000 BOOKS BEFORE KINDERGARTEN
The 1,000 Books before Kindergarten program encourages families to read at least 1,000 books to their preschooler, birth to age 5, before they enter school. This program was developed to increase awareness of the importance of reading to very young children as well as encouraging parents to embrace their role as their child’s first teacher. Families can sign up at the Mary L. Cook Public Library. Each child will receive a folder with a page to record the books they read. Each time a goal of recording 20 books is reached, children are encouraged to bring their folder to the library to receive a sticker. Each time the goal of recording 100 books is reached, children should bring their folder to library to receive a free book and pick up more library books.
The goal of this project is to help kids enter school ready to learn. Reading is one of the most important things you can do to ensure your child’s success when they begin school. It also provides an opportunity to increase their exposure to a wide variety of books, and to promote use of the library – a gold mine of free material available to our community members.
